Palanhaar Yojana is a welfare scheme launched by the government to provide care, education, and financial support to orphaned and vulnerable children. Instead of placing these children in institutions, the scheme encourages their upbringing within society by allowing their closest relatives or familiar individuals to become their guardians (Palanhaar).

Who Are Eligible to Apply for Palanhar Yojana
The Palanhaar Yojana, implemented from February 8, 2005, was initially introduced to support orphaned children from Scheduled Castes. Over time, amendments have been made to include the following categories:
Orphaned children | Children of parents sentenced to death or life imprisonment through judicial process |
Children of widowed mothers eligible for destitute pension (up to three children) | Children of mothers who have remarried under the nata system (up to three children) |
Children of remarried widows | Children of parents affected by AIDS |
Children of parents suffering from leprosy | Children of disabled parents |
Children of divorced or abandoned women |
Under the Palanhaar Yojana, guardians of these orphaned children are provided financial support for their upbringing and education. The annual income of the Palanhaar family should not exceed ₹1.20 lakh.
It is mandatory for orphaned children to be enrolled in an Anganwadi center at the age of 2 and to attend school by the age of 6.
Each Palanhaar family receives a grant of ₹500 per month for children up to the age of 5, and after the child enrolls in school, the amount increases to ₹1,000 per month until the child turns 18. Additionally, an annual grant of ₹2,000 per child is provided for clothing, shoes, sweaters, and other essential needs (except for children under the widow and nata categories).
This grant is approved by the departmental district officer in urban areas and by the respective development officer in rural areas upon application by the Palanhaar family.
